Tunnelling an RTP Stream Through SRT

With the release of version 3.3, Media Gateway/SRT Gateway supports tunnelling RTP streams through SRT. See https://www.srtalliance.org/interoperability-between-rtp-and-srt/ for more information.

To set up two Haivision Gateways for RTP tunnelling as illustrated in the following figure:

  1. On your source streaming device, output an RTP stream to your local Gateway.
  2. On the local Gateway, create a new route. See Creating a Route for more details. In the New Route screen:
    1. Populate the desired route and source names.
    2. In Protocol, select the TS over RTP protocol.
    3. Enter the appropriate RTP parameters for your source stream.
    4. Check the Retain Header > Passthrough Mode checkbox.
    5. Click the Add Destination button, and select the TS over SRT protocol.
    6. Enter the desired SRT streaming parameters, and check the RTP Header checkbox.

  3. On the remote Gateway, create a new route. In the New Route screen:
    1. Populate the desired route and source names.
    2. In Protocol, select TS over SRT.
    3. Enter the appropriate SRT streaming parameters to correlate with those paramters on the local Gateway.
    4. Click the Add Destination button, and select TS over RTP protocol.
    5. Enter the appropriate RTP parameters for your destination stream, and check the Retain Header > Passthrough Mode checkbox.
  4. Start the streams on both Gateways. See Starting, Stopping, and Deleting a Route for details.

You have now successfully tunnelled an RTP stream via SRT to take advantage of SRT reliability across the public Internet and firewalls.

Tip

If desired, on your local Gateway you can create multiple SRT destinations to tunnel the RTP stream to multiple remote Gateways. Just ensure that the RTP Header and Retain Header > Passthrough Mode checkboxes are checked for each destination.
