Publishing Your Media
Last updated on Dec 17, 2020
Before a media asset is visible in a feed or player, it must be published first.
Publish Profiles
Publish Profiles can be added to the environment and managed by administrators to simplify publishing tasks. Publish Profiles allow your admin users to create customized transcoding and distribution workflows directly from the Haivision VCMS Console. There is no need to understand file formats, metadata requirements or what each destination requires – the publish profile will take care of that for you. Each destination (your site.com, YouTube, other partners) will typically have a "Publish Profile" modelled to support unique file and delivery requirements.
The following profiles are available:
Publish Profile Name | Purpose |
16:9 Source File for Akamai HD | Any 16:9 source for output to your website. |
4:3 Source File for Akamai HD | Any 4:3 source for output to your website. |
Live Streaming Event | Create public URLs for a new live event. |
Podcast Audio Only | Any source for output to iTunes Mp3. |
Podcast Video Only | Any source for output to iTunes Mp4. |
YouTube – (Available Upon Request) | Any source for output to QCC YouTube channel. |
Publish Workflows
Common workflow scenarios supported through Publish Profiles include:
- Detect and retain the native frame rate of the file.
- Detect SD vs. HD content and use optimized encoding profiles for each.
- Detect and retain the original aspect ratio of the content.
- Attach pre-roll videos or onscreen bugs/graphics for branding or promotional purposes.
A publish profile describes the steps that the Publish system takes to deliver one or more specific physical files, or file targets, to your player environment, mobile devices or syndication partners. The diagram following illustrates the construct and processing step for a typical Publish Profile in the Haivision VCMS environment:
When it's time for delivery, the system goes through the steps you've defined.
- First, the system looks to see if the file exists in its required format:
- If found, VCMS moves the file to the right location and is ready for use.
- If not, the system then looks for a mezzanine (the uploaded "Master") file that can be transcoded and moved to the right location.
- If there is no mezzanine file, then it looks for any other video file with which to work.
The whole process is automatic and completely customizable by the creator of the Publish Profile.
Publishing
To publish your media to one or more destinations:
- In VCMS, hover over the Navigation sidebar to expand the Main menu.
- Select the Media option from the Main menu.
- From the list, click the name of the media asset you want to publish.
- When the Media Details screen opens, click the Publish & Share button at the top of the screen.
- When prompted, provide the desired publishing/sharing method type.
- Click the Publish Status tab to see the current status of the publish job.
Unpublishing
Each media asset can be published once with any available publish profile. You can reverse the publish operation by unpublishing the media using the same profile. Once a media has been unpublished with a particular profile, that profile can then be used to publish the media again. Unpublish can also be used to revoke media from a specific partner or destination (e.g, iTunes). The status of unpublish operations are clearly marked in the UI.
- In VCMS, hover over the Navigation sidebar to expand the Main menu.
- Select the Media option from the Main menu.
- From the list, click the name of the media asset you want to unpublish.
- When the Media Details screen opens, click the
dropdown menu to the right of Publish & Share button. - Select the Unpublish & Unshare option.
